"This species is the most southern member of the genus. It grows in New South Wales, from Sydney, northward over a large area in scattered populations. Some of its populations are sense, particularly in coastal areas where they grow in sand. A large plant with many flat, glossy, dark green leaves that form a full crown. The adult leaflets are up to 130 mm long and are 4-12 mm wide. They are linear and smooth becoming spine-like towards the base of the rachis. In sandy soils and semi-dry locations, this species generally develops an underground stem. However, in shallow soils, the stem is above ground and with age develops a trunk up to 2m tall and 600m in diameter. This species is cold-hardy and has withstood minus 4 deg, without damage. It prefers bright light or partial shade and it can be grown in full sun after juvenile growth disappears." - Palms and Cycads, Beyond the Tropics - Keith Boyer
