About Matakana Palms
Matakana Palms, your go-to palm tree nursery just north of Auckland, is managed by owners Nicola and Craig, who took over the business in September 2023.
They’re continuing the legacy built by Nicola’s parents, Bruce and Raewyn Whistler, experienced horticulturists who established the nursery and helped shape its reputation for quality palms across Matakana and the wider North Island.
Nicola and Craig carry on that same care and plant knowledge forward, while also modernising how the business runs and making it easier for customers to connect, order and collect.
Every palm is grown with patience and attention, with many started from specially imported seed and nurtured over many years before they’re ready for sale. That long growing cycle reflects the commitment behind each plant and the pride taken in producing strong, healthy stock.
From a single statement palm to a full planting plan for a property landscaping project, the team at Matakana Palms is here to help you find the right solution for your space.
A private garden for photoshoots
The Whistler’s subtropical garden at Matakana Palms nursery offers a lush, private setting for wedding photos and commercial shoots, to be found at just 45 minutes from Auckland.
A man-made waterfall flows into a pond with island and jetty features, surrounded by a fale-style open pavilion and hundreds of established subtropical palms and cycads that create a gorgeous backdrop.
The garden is layered with hydrangeas, clivia, ferns, bromeliads, tractor seat plants and frangipani, bringing colour, texture and a natural, relaxed feel throughout the space.
