White Hydrangea blooms in late spring and summer.
- They prefer part shade: Plant your hydrangeas in a spot with afternoon shade to protect the flowers from the harsh sun
- Prune 1/3 back annually in winter
- Apply mulch to suppress weeds and keep moisture in the ground
- Fertilize to accelerate growth
- Keep them hydrated (especially in the summer months). They will perform in the ground better vs in a pot
- Avoid colour-altering products: You do not need to use aluminum sulfate or lime, as these are for changing the color of pink and blue hydrangeas
- Feed with compost
- Hydrangea prefer free draining soil
Understand the natural aging process:
- Embrace the colour change: White hydrangeas are often stable in colour and do not change based on soil pH like their pink and blue counterparts. However, the blooms may naturally fade to a greenish/reddish colour as they age towards the end of the season.
- Leave for winter interest: The aged colour can be a beautiful, antique-like look. You can leave the faded blooms on the plant for winter interest or use them in dried arrangements.
