Cycas Revoluta
$50.00 – $145.00
A slow growing medium sized cycad from Japan with a trunk to 5m and 40cm diameter, with numerous suckers coming from the base. Female cones greyish yellow and hairy, while the male cone narrowly cylindrical. Prized for its ornamental appearance and hardiness.
Generally the species is easily grown and tolerates moderate to heavy frosts. Garden grown specimens are best planted in full sun in well drained loamy soil and watered during dry periods. Mulshing and regular light applications of NPK fertiler are beneficial for this gross feeder. We cut off any tatty fronds once a new flush has been produced to emphases the trunk.
Also happy as a pottered cycad – if their nutrients and water requirements are met. Often grown in conservatories but is also an excellent indoor plantand will tolerate poor light and neglect – just watch out for their sharpish fronds.
A similar species: C. taitungensis has longer, flatter leaves and longer flatter leaflets.
Suited to temperate and subtropical regions in NZ. Tolerating down to -10 degrees.
Don’t plant these too close to your house! A common mistake – they need space!
